Teak

Teak (Tectona grandis) is widely regarded as the premier hardwood for outdoor furniture, offering unmatched durability for outdoor environments. This exceptional wood is rich in natural oils, rubber, and silica, which, when properly dried, provide built-in weatherproofing. Teak is highly resistant to the elements, insects, rot, and mildew, ensuring longevity.

The teak used in ARD Outdoor products is Grade A, kiln-dried, and sustainably harvested from plantations in Indonesia. Teak trees take approximately 20-25 years to mature fully. Initially, the wood presents a warm honey-brown hue that, over time, naturally evolves into a distinguished silver-grey as it weathers. This transformation is purely cosmetic and does not impact the wood’s integrity. For those who prefer to maintain the honey-brown colour, UV protectors (similar to sunblock for wood) are available.

It is important to note that teak cannot be painted or sealed, as its natural oils prevent such treatments. Only teak-specific stains that allow the wood to breathe can be used for colouring.

Caring for teak furniture is simple and requires only basic cleaning to remove dirt and prevent mold growth. For optimal results, cleaning should be done on a sunny day to allow the furniture to dry faster. It is recommended to use a specially formulated teak cleaner, which not only cleans but also brightens the wood. Alternatively, soapy water can be used for basic cleaning.
