Description

Teak (Tectona Grandis) is the great hardwood of outdoor furniture. There is no more durable natural product for outdoor use than teak. Teak contains an abundance of natural oils, rubber, and silica. When properly dried, these oils/rubber literally weatherproof the wood. Teak is resistant to virtually all of the elements, insects, rot, and mildew. Quality teak will last for years. In fact, you can find hundred year old teak benches in London parks, the wood previously used on ships. Teak is grown in tropical climates in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We use Grade A, kiln dried teak from sustainable plantations in Indonesia. Teak takes about 20-25 years to grow into a mature tree. In appearance, new teak is a honey-brown color. The UV rays of the sun will turn Teak from the honey-brown color when new, to beautiful silver grey. This is the natural weathering and does not affect the wood in any way, other than to change the color. If you prefer the honey-brown color, we can recommend UV protectors for the teak (sunblock for wood). However, because of the amount of natural oils in teak, you cannot paint it or seal it, and only teak specific stains which allow it to breathe, can be used to color the wood. We have used teak in many of our lines for years including Rosewood, Canvas, Vista, Mayfair, Woodfield, Vintage, Pacific, and our beautiful Muskoka Chairs. Teak is very durable and will last for generations. It only needs some basic cleaning to remove dirt and to prevent external mold growth. You should choose a sunny day to clean your teak furniture so that it will dry faster. It is recommended to use a specially formulated teak cleaner such to clean and brighten the wood at the same time. Soapy water will also suffice for basic cleaning.
